Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Nicholson.

Natasha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

I was always into doing my makeup and hair growing up even though looking back I wasn’t as good as I thought, lol. I never thought I would end up doing it professionally. I always wanted to be a model and in the fashion industry. My mom wouldn’t let me wear makeup so I decided to get in drill team so she didn’t have a choice but to let me wear it because it was required. So, I won! When I got pregnant with my first kid, I decided to go to beauty school and figured since I was pregnant for nine months, I could go to beauty school and get my license and start working after I had my baby which is exactly what I did. I worked at a few chop shops, barber shops, and salons and I was never truly happy with my hours and I definitely wasn’t happy with my pay. I could never get past someone making all the money off of services I did and only payong me a couple bucks an hour. Now, I’ve never bee good at math but I knew that didn’t add up. I was working a job in Frisco and it seemed like the employer was always deducting money from my check for something. I got fed up and started saying i was going to quit and go into business for myself. One day, I was headed to church and I got a text that said, “Tired of working for others? Be your own boss!” I called the number on the flier and signed on to have my own suite. I had no clientele and I cried many days! My mom paid my rent for awhile until I built a clientele. Now, I’m going on seven years as my own boss! God is good!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

It definitely has not been a smooth road. I’ve dealt with financial struggles as well as personal struggles. Being an entrepreneur is an emotional roller coaster. When you have a good week you feel like your tha baddest in tha land then when you have a bad week you feel like you suck and everyone hates you so it’s always a struggle for me to accept that there will be good and bad days in this business. Dealing with people that try to take advantage can be a struggle as well especially when they’re close to you. I had to toughen up and demand my respect as a business owner.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Trendsettas Makeup and Hair – what should we know?

My business is Trendsettas Makeup and Hair. I didn’t plan on that being my name it just happened and now I feel kind of stuck with it. Back when Myspace was poppin, I went by Trendsetta so when it came time to come up with a business name all I could think of was Trendsettas Makeup and Hair which works because I’m known for being trendy, stylish, and thinking outside the box. I specialize in all hair types and textures as well as makeup and hair for special occasions. I love special occasions!! I am extremely proud of having customer satisfaction. My clients show me lots of love by leaving reviews and referring others and that is the best tip ever to me!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?

I think personality goes a long way. Being humble and down to earth. Everybody goes through ups and downs in life and everybody wants to feel special and pampered and have that time where they can totally unwind and be in good company. I strive to provide that experience and to make people feel special, comfortable and taken care of. That I believe is what has been the key to my success thus far.
